M&Ms

the day of the widom tooth surgery - well, wasn't as bad as i thought. not really swollen, was able to eat a hotdog bun for tea! hah not pain at all. xx had some pain though and could only eat porridge on one side.

after the surgery for both of us

1 day post op - wah got a shock when i saw myself in the mirror, looked like i had a fishball in my mouth or something. swollen but still not pain.
complementary M&Ms faces lol

well even though it was swollen, and everyone says its growing by the minute, i was able to eat normal food, had satay, springrolls and all the rubbish at the reception yesterday after the ceremony heh still no pain! ponstan is good! well can't say the same for xx hehe

os

OS week, one week of attachment to the oral maxilofacial surgery department. one of the more interesting posting. made me interested in specialising in oms but after today's wisdom tooth op, maybe not so heh

the first few days we had the opportunity of viewing ga operations. quite interesting to see the anaesthetist putting ppl to sleep and then waking them up. posting to nuh A&E department was an eyeopener too. saw a man brought in by an ambulance. he life was in danger as a result of anaphylaxis. the doctors and nurses tried to resuscitate him using cpr and the defibrillator (electric shock), just like in the tv shows. unfortunately, they managed to save the heart but not his brain.

at A&E posting

heh heh finally, i'm no longer an OS virgin heh, did my 1st wisdom tooth extraction today, though i did not do a perfect job, i'm glad xx is still alright heh and i did like at least 70% of it! i think hehe oh well, it was a real bloody experience.
then, it was my turn to be cut up by pl. real funny senario. suppose to start at 11, then dr chan(not me) found new gadgets in the clinic to play with - a dvd/harddisk recorder, lcd tv and headmounted video camera. so he wanted to play with it as he was intending to get one for his own clinic, guess what that camera cost $50 000! so he began fiddling around with it, dr fan joined in the fun trying to set up the system. finally they got the i.t. unit to come down and by the time it was set up, already 12. so they filmed my entire op.

trying out the 50k camera

after going through the op, at least now i understand how patients feel.
points to take note:

1)good LA is a must! not only idn block, long buccal also crucial for the incision
2)must support the jaws when elevating!, my jaws felt like they were going to be dislocated.
3)other than the bur, the straigh handpiece will also become hot! cool it
4)lips(other side), cheeks are not anaesthetised

hmm strangely, post op was not as bad as i thought. though theres still bleeding, i managed to eat hotdog bun 4 hours after the op, heh

oh yeah managed to go take photos with xx on her commencement day! congratulations dear!

oh my...

mum went for a day surgery today, got abscess on her back. then she told me this, "the doctor came to ask me if i got any medical condition, i told him sjogren syndrome and he said what? how do you spell?" i was quite shocked to hear that.i'm sure my mum's pronounciation is alright. i'm hoping that that person was a nurse and not a doctor. at least i will feel safer the next time i need medical treatment.

+1

yesterday, i am officially 23+1, 2 cycles of the zodiac, 1 year to a quarter century old, mid twenties, whatever u call it lol i'm still young! as prof hsu said, i had a special present from nus. well not exactly a present, but a very special fieldtrip which broadened my perspective. did i come into dentistry for the money? yeah! what about the part about care for patients which i'm sure everyone said in the admission interviews? yeah it comes with it. but the fieldtrip really made us realize the patient care aspects of dentistry. as for the contents of the trip, i won't be writing here as we were told not to tell and i think it will be more beneficial going there not knowing anything. the staff-in-charge there was very good though in giving us his presentation. dr peter yu is a real good dentist. and so is dr joanne uy because she wished me happy birthday today, my vote for best academic staff in dentistry goes to her this year lol

after school went straight for dinner with xx at ichiban boshi, a jap restaurant in wisma which is quite gd and dun be fooled by its posh decor, the prices are reasonable. really getting old i guess, didn't have much to do after dinner, so headed to her place to slack and watch tv hehe heres what i got this year!
my favourite from xx! a red sigg waterbottle with free magnets.

erm dun be decieved by its looks, its actually heart shaped cookies made by xx and its good!
cute doggy calender from pl
funky wall clock from adrian and its red!
and a flashy nike laptop bag from my patient ms low

another one bites the dust

as expected, world cup outing boiled down to me and dt, but that ain't gonna stop us! decided to head down to nus staff club which xl recommended. it costs 2 bucks a match inclusive of a drink but we managed to sneak pass heh the atmosphere was fantastic with the match being shown on a huge projector screen with decent speakers.we reached at around 1050 but all the seats were taken, so we stood aside and watched the 1st half of the england/portugal match. quite boring though the 1st match. half-time we met xl and her friend.
so for the 2nd half, we changed our positions. found a table lying around and so we set it up and ended up with great seats for the game. the game expectedly ended with a penalty shoot out and ricardo became the hero of portugal with his impressive saves. after the match headed down to west coast mac to get some food. the place was crowded too and the tv looks so much smaller compared to the projector screen so we went back to the staff club after having our fill.

Brazil vs France, many expected brazil to win but seems like france is their nemesis. the french deserved to win though with zidane showing his true powers unlike his previous game. barthez only had a few saves to make. looks like it will be a finals between germany and france this time.

as the match was going on, a follow- up research study was done at the same time. Hypothesis: There is no difference between lectures and world-cup matches in inducing sleep in dt. constant factors include air conditioned indoor area, lecture theatre seats. an initial photo of the subject was taken prior to the match as seen below. the subject looks awake and excited to catch the game.
half an hour later...
the subject was seen nodding and swaying away in an uncontrolled manner. there was no response to visual signals. these are sufficient to prove that the subject is in deep sleep. P-value is >0.05 and so there is no significance. it can be concluded that the hypothesis is true that there is no difference between lectures and world cup matches in inducing sleep in dt.

negative thoughts

today, quarterfinals between argentina and germany, quite an exciting clash, guessed it would be quite crowded at mcdonalds, so i thought why not just watch at home. went to school and told dt about it and well haha he sounded quite excited, seems like alot of ppl coming over. i started to think oh shit is there enough space at home? wah seh so many ppl, steady after that can go supper and if onz can even watch the 3am match since its almost the end of the hols. my wishful thinking... should have known better from the previous outings lol lucky though dt, sw and ll came over and there was enough seats for all.

well, guess i'm expecting too much from them or maybe i'm having too much negative thoughts as school is starting again. or maybe this has been accumulating since the beginning. In most classes, there will be 1 or 2 ppl who are the so-called organisers. they make effort to plan activities for the class. they are good people. it is them who keep the class together. without them, the class just breaks apart, like my jc class. thankfully, there is a josephian who keeps my sec 4 class(or well some of us) together but he is away in china on attachment and his presence is definitely missed. dental class, well i must say this guy is always enthu in planning activities for the class but sadly, the response has been getting worse and he is becoming discouraged. responses like "who's going?" or last min pang seh are becoming common. even i (who dun organise stuff) also feel pek chek for him haiz oh well, if everyone wants to be like that then fuck it, so be it. theres nothing good left in dental school anymore.

i miss watching worldcup in army camp and with my sji friends, those overseas faster come back and we can catch the next one together!
